Welcome to the most epic round up of all things oats! Over the years I’ve made almost 100 (yes, 1-0-0) delicious treats, baked goods, and of course, easy breakfasts using oats that are serious staples.
In this roundup I included recipes you can make using regular rolled oats, plus some fun baked goods using oat flour that you’ll love. If you haven’t yet, be sure to check out all of my recipes using oat flour for some delicious inspiration.

The key to different types of oats
Not all oats are created equal! There are different types that are great for using in specific recipes:
- Groats: in case you’ve never heard this word before, you’re not alone! Groats are whole oat grain kernals that are cleaned and shelled. They take awhile to cook and it’s best if you soak and then simmer them until they’re chewy and slightly nutty.
- Steel Cut Oats: these oats cook a bit faster than groats because they’re essentially groats that have been cut up. I get lots of questions about using steel cut oats in my recipes and because they take longer to cook and create a thicker texture, I do not recommend baking with them.
- Old Fashioned Rolled Oats: these are the oats that I use the most in my recipes! They’re essentially groats that have been steamed and rolled out so that they’re more like flakes. These cook much faster than groats and rolled oats.
- Quick Oats: these are just regular, old fashioned rolled oats that have been rolled out thinner so that they cook faster! They’re often called quick oats or instant oats and are a bit lighter in texture than regular rolled oats. You can typically use these in my oat recipes.
- Oat Flour: finally, get ready to make some incredible baked goods using oat flour! It has a similar absorbency to coconut flour and can easily be made right at home (see below!)
How to make oat flour from scratch
You can easily make your own gluten free oat flour by simply placing oats into a blender and blending or pulsing until they’re smooth and resemble flour. This is a super easy & affordable option. Be sure to measure it out before using it in a recipe!
