Cold Brew Tonic

This seems to be the summer of cold brew tonics here in Europe. ♡

We’ve been seeing them featured on coffee shop menus everywhere we’ve traveled lately. And after sampling a few, I understand the draw — they’re so fizzy and refreshing!

The concept is just as it sounds — cold brew concentrate is served over ice, topped with bubbly tonic water, and garnished with a slice of lemon or orange. We’ve seen various versions made with espresso too, but I have to say that I definitely prefer the smoother, non-acidic flavor of cold brew in this drink. It pairs perfectly with the more bitter, botanical flavor of the tonic water (Fever Tree is my go-to). And when served ice cold with a squeeze of citrus on a hot summer day, this drink is downright delightful.

Here’s how to make one!

Cold Brew Tonic Ingredients

Before we get to the full recipe below, here are a few notes about the four ingredients you will need to make this cold brew tonic recipe:

  • Cold brew concentrate: Feel free to either make homemade cold brew concentrate (<– here is my tutorial and recipe) or purchase store-bought cold brew concentrate (<– I enjoy this brand). If you’re using store-bought concentrate, please note that brands can vary significantly in terms of how strong their concentrate may be. So I would recommend starting with a bit less concentrate, then give the drink a taste, and you can always add more if you would like.
  • Tonic water: I really love the flavor of classic Fever Tree tonic water in this drink, but feel free to use whatever brand of tonic water you prefer.
  • Citrus: I recommend serving the drink with a squeeze of either fresh orange or lemon, which adds such a lovely hint of citrus to the drink.
  • Ice: Finally, you will need a glass full of ice to serve this drink.

Variations

Here are a few other variations that you’re welcome to try:

  • Add sweetener: Tonic water already adds significant sweetness to this drink. But if you prefer your coffee even sweeter, you are welcome to stir in some simple syrup or your preferred sweetener.
  • Add a cherry: For a fun cocktail-y twist, we occasionally love adding a Luxardo cherry to our cold brew tonics.
  • Use a flavored tonic water: There are all sorts of flavored tonic waters available nowadays that could add some interesting notes to this drink. But please pick wisely…some flavors could also be a bit of a disaster. 😉
  • Use espresso: You could also swap freshly-brewed espresso for cold brew concentrate if you would like. I would just recommend popping the espresso shots in the freezer for 10 minutes before making the drink so that they do not melt too much of the ice.
