Zodiac Cocktails – Virgo: Espresso Martini

Hi, and welcome to Virgo Season! (Almost*). Unfortunately those Leos are gonna make us wait until their time is done (which is thankfully very, very soon).

You can celebrate Virgo season by: having multiple appointments jotted down on a meticulous planner; freaking out silently; secretly judging others; being in a committed relationship with your label maker; unsolicited fact-checking; overworking yourself because only YOU do things the “right” way; helping others with your practical nature; being a non-mushy caregiver; being nitpicky AF; having a hard time letting loose; and being observant and kind.

Virgos are a mutable Earth sign – ‘mutable’ meaning highly adaptable, flexible and open to change, and ‘Earth sign’ symbolizing practicality, logic, and a sense of duty to those whom Virgos consider valuable and worthy. If Capricorns are work horses, Virgos are the ones running the work horses. These guys and gals work HARD and play… well, never. Virgos have a hard time shutting off their brain because there’s always something to be do, or something to be fixed by someone more inexperienced. Virgos take it upon themselves to do that fixing because they truly believe their way is the correct way, and since they’re so detail-oriented, they feel they don’t make many mistakes.

The Virgo’s symbol is the virgin, but that doesn’t just mean someone who is inexperienced sexually; it also means a free-spirit, confident woman who did things on her own terms. That dual nature of the word “virgin” helps symbolize the dual nature of Virgo: they can be confident in their conviction or naive and suffering from self-doubt.

Virgos are extremely neat and very organized. They tend to have a pleasant, beautiful face and they don’t usually wear anything outlandish that would call attention to themselves. Even if you catch a Virgo in conversation, they can still exhibit shyness and are more reserved. They are unemotional and not very sentimental (Earth sign characteristics) and sometimes may have a hard time expressing her feelings. A meticulous attention to detail, they are observant in remembering these details and are often defined by their work (a true workaholic!). They’re efficient, aces at helping with practical matters, they tend to follow the rules and take responsibility seriously (unless of course, they can do something better than what was suggested).

Expressed positively, Virgos are gentle, sympathetic without tying too much emotion to it, dedicated, helpful, organized, witty and charming, knowledgeable and kind. Expressed negatively, however, Virgos can be cranky and irritable, overly critical of others and themselves, nervous, prudish, overly demanding, and even exhibit signs of hypochondria. Also surprisingly, some negative Virgos can even be somewhat untidy.

This ESPRESSO MARTINI is sweet, strong, and straight-up, just like practical, straightforward Virgos in my Zodiac Cocktail Series! Made with just three ingredients, these sassy martinis pack a serious punch. When I was trying to come up with a cocktail to represent this worker bee, I wanted something neat, to-the-point, and could fuel them for long nights of organizing. Virgos are usually seldom seen without some kind of coffee in their hands as they blaze through stacks of work, so I knew it had to have coffee, and therefore, the Espresso Martini was created!

This martini is sweet, strong and straight-up, just like a Virgo. No frills, nothing wild and crazy – just a purely delicious, coffee-flavored martini.

Zodiac Cocktails – Virgo: Espresso Martini

This Espresso Martini is sweet, strong, and straight-up, just like a gentle but practical Virgo in my Zodiac Cocktail Series!

Ingredients

1 ounce vodka (I used vanilla vodka)
1 ounce Kahlua or any other coffee-flavored liqueur
1.5 ounces espresso or black coffee, cooled
Ice
Coffee beans or chocolate-covered espresso beans for garnish

Instructions

In a cocktail shaker, add in the vodka, Kahlua, and espresso. Fill with lots of ice. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds or until cold. Strain and pour into a martini or coupe glass. Garnish with coffee beans or chocolate-covered espresso beans.
