A Healthy Layered Smoothie Recipe
Smoothies are kind of a funny category of food. Are they drinks? Snacks? Treats? To me, they’re kind of a mashup of all of those things. But, they can be a little tricky to make if you haven’t gotten in the groove, yet.
There have been times when I just tossed in all kinds of things and blended it up, but the results were usually not ideal. Turns out, you kind of need a plan, or at least a guideline, for combining the right things in the right amounts.
This recipe, however, is definitely tested and tasty. Each layer has its own flavor, and the two layers work together beautifully to create a pleasing contrast. Layer one is made with raspberries and turmeric, plus orange juice and honey to round it out. Layer two is a mango-ginger combination, again tied together with citrus (this layer doesn’t need the additional sweetness of the honey).

Is this Mango Smoothie Vegan?
This smoothie is not technically vegan as written, because of the honey. Although honey is not exactly an animal byproduct, it is created by bees, of course, thus vegans avoid using it.
Other than that, the ingredients are all plant-based. You could certainly (and deliciously) make this smoothie vegan by substituting a plant-based sweetener, such as agave nectar, for the honey. Keep in mind that different sweeteners vary in their intensity, so you may need to adjust the amount.
Citrus Mango Smoothie Ingredients
A special thing about this fruity mango smoothie is the fact that it contains turmeric and ginger. Both are so, so good for you. Turmeric is an excellent source of curcumin, which is a powerful natural anti-inflammatory. Ginger is full of helpful antioxidants, among other great health benefits. Who says eating healthy can’t be delicious!
For the Berry Layer
- Raspberries: I like to use frozen raspberries for this smoothie. If you only have fresh berries on hand, just freeze your own!
- Orange Juice: With or without pulp.
- Honey: Or your choice of sweetener.
- Ground Turmeric: Half a teaspoon is plenty.
For the Mango Layer
- Mango Chunks: Also frozen.
- Orange Juice
- Lemon Juice: You’ll need about 1 small lemon’s worth of juice.
- Water: For thinning out the drink.
- Ginger: For the best flavor, use freshly grated ginger.
Should You Use Fresh or Frozen Fruit?
You’ll notice that I use frozen raspberries and frozen mango chunks here. That’s because I find that smoothies have a thicker, more appealing texture if the fruit is frozen.
However, you don’t have to use pre-packaged fruit from the freezer section if you don’t want to! Just prep your fresh fruit by washing, peeling, and cutting, and then place it in the freezer for a while to get it frozen solid. Then you’re ready to blend! You can also use ice to thicken it even more. I almost always do.
How to Make a Citrus Raspberry Mango Smoothie
It’s really easy to make this healthy drink. All you have to do is blend up the berry layer, and then follow it up with the mango layer! If you find that your blends need a bit more body, you can add ice to the mix to thicken the smoothie up. If it’s too thin, add more orange juice or some extra water.
- Make Berry Layer: Make the berry layer first by combining frozen raspberries, orange juice, honey and turmeric in a blender; pulse until smooth. Pour this layer into a glass, and place it in the freezer to keep cold while you make the next part.
- Make Mango Layer: Now make the mango layer by combining the frozen mango chunks, orange juice, lemon juice, water and ginger in your blender; pulse until smooth. Take the berry layer out of the freezer, and slowly pour the mango layer over it.
- Enjoy!

These simple tips will help you make a beautiful and delicious berry mango smoothie with no trouble!
- Choose a Great Blender: Unfortunately, not all blenders are created equal! Some poorer-quality blenders just don’t handle blending hard and resistant items like ice cubes or hard fruits and/or veggies very well. To find the best blender, try reading verified customer reviews online. A High Powered Blender is a good place to start.
- Blend in Stages: I find that it’s easier to get a nice, smooth blend by starting off with a few pulses on slow speed, and then moving up to higher speeds once things are broken up.
- Ice Alternatives: Some smoothie blends just seem to need more ice added, in order to get a good, thick consistency. But, you don’t have to add regular ice. You can use frozen juice, frozen kombucha, or even frozen coffee cubes to add to smoothies.

Instructions
For Berries Layer
Make the berries layer first by combining frozen raspberries, orange juice, honey, and turmeric in a blender; add ice and process until smooth. Add more juice or water to thin it out, if needed. Add more ice if you’d like to thicken it.
Taste for sweetness and adjust accordingly.
Pour into a glass and put in the freezer to keep cold.
For Mango Layer
In the blender combine frozen mango chunks, orange juice, lemon juice, water, and ginger; add ice and process until blended and smooth. Add more liquid if needed.
Slowly pour mango layer over berries layer.
Serve.
For thicker consistency, add ice cubes to the fruits and blend until smooth.
