Editor’s Note: A bounty of fresh peaches can only mean one thing — it’s time to make peach cobbler! This easy peach cobbler recipe by David Venable is just what you need this summer. Although this recipe has more than 15 ingredients, don’t let that deter you. This peach cobbler recipe is actually easy to follow, and won’t take long to bake, either. You can likely have this delicious peach dessert recipe on the table within an hour. Although a scoop of vanilla ice cream is recommended when serving each slice, a dollop of your favorite vanilla Greek yogurt will work, too. You’ll love serving this cobbler at your next picnic or cookout!

Every summer when the Venable family hit the road for vacation, we’d stop and buy fresh peaches at a roadside stand. We’d eat our fill and bring the rest to friends and family for peach cobblers. My recipe is easy and always brings smiles. Be sure to use the freshest and ripest summer peaches that you can find.

  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 8 to 10 peaches, peeled, pitted, and thinly sliced
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 pint vanilla ice cream


  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Put the butter in a 9 x 13- inch baking dish and place in the oven to melt. Once melted, remove from the oven. Keep the oven on.

  2. To make the peaches, combine the sliced peaches, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch in a bowl and toss well. Set aside.

  3. To make the batter, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Stir in the milk, egg, and vanilla. Pour the batter over the melted butter.

  4. Arrange the peach slices on top of the batter. Sprinkle the remaining sugar over the entire cobbler. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the cake begins to pull away from the sides of the baking dish. Remove to a wire rack to cool for 10 minutes before serving.

  5. Spoon a scoop of ice cream over each serving.

How to Select the Best Peaches: An Additional Note from the Editor

Selecting the right peach to use in a baked dish can be a tricky process. If the peach is underripe, then it can be difficult to cut and to eat. it also doesn’t taste that great. On the other hand, a peach that has been sitting on your kitchen counter for almost a week, if not longer, might be mushy and devoid of much taste.

What’s the best way to select a peach? It’s all in how the fruit feels to you. According to Ohio State University Extension, you should select peaches that are firm to the touch. You should also avoid any peaches that feel mushy. If a peach you have selected is not quite ripe enough for baking, then the Los Angeles Times recommends leaving the fruit at room temperature for a day or two; that should be enough time for the fruit to ripen completely. Selecting the peaches, and then baking with the fruit in a timely manner, can make a considerable difference in how your peach dessert will ultimately taste.
