Ingredients for Sweet Potato Pie:

  • Mashed Sweet Potatoes (cook before making the pie)
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Ground Nutmeg
  • Eggs
  • Evaporated Milk
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Sugar
  • Pie Crust

Ingredients for Walnut Topping:

  • Walnuts
  • Butter
  • Brown sugar
  • Flour

The delicious walnut topping makes all the difference in this recipe, and it adds a wonderful texture. All you need to make the topping is chopped walnuts, butter, brown sugar, and flour!

How to Make Sweet Potato Pie

This Homemade Sweet Potato Pie recipe is as easy as can be. Prep is simple, and then you just have to wait for it to bake. No hassle with this tasty dessert! The pre-made pie crust makes things extra easy, and the rest is a breeze. Before starting the pie, cook and mash up the sweet potatoes (you’ll need about 1 1/2 cups), and preheat the oven to 425°F.

Homemade Sweet Potato Pie:

  1. Stir together sugar, cinnamon, & nutmeg
  2. In another bowl, beat eggs, evaporated milk, & vanilla together
  3. Whisk the two mixtures together
  4. Stir in mashed sweet potatoes and beat mixture to a thin consistency
  5. Place pie crust into a pie dish, then pour sweet potato mixture into the crust
  6. Bake 15 minutes at 425°F
  7. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F and bake 30 more minutes
  8. Combine walnut topping ingredients in a bowl while the pie bakes
  9. Sprinkle topping over the pie and bake another 15 minutes

Sweet Potato Pie with Walnut Topping

  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 can 12 ounces evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon quality vanilla extract
  • 1-1/2 cups mashed cooked sweet potatoes
  • 1 unbaked pie crust 9 inches

For the Walnut Topping

  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
  • Ice Cream or Whipped Cream for serving
  1. Preheat oven to 425F

  2. In a bowl, stir together the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

  3. In a separate bowl, beat together eggs, evaporated milk, and vanilla.

  4. Pour the sugar mixture into the egg mixture and whisk to combine.

  5. Stir in the mashed sweet potatoes potatoes and beat until combine. The mixture will be thin.

  6. Place pie shell into pie dish and press to seal. Use a fork to prick the bottom and sides.

  7. Pour sweet potato mixture into unbaked pie shell.

  8. Bake on center rack at 425° for 15 minutes.

  9. Reduce heat to 350° and bake for an additional 30 minutes.

  10. While the pie is baking, make your walnut topping. In a small bowl, combine all ingredients for the walnut topping. Use your fingers to create a crumble with all the ingredients. They don’t need to be smooth. Set aside.

  11. Remove pie from the oven and sprinkle with topping.

  12. Bake 15 minutes or until topping is golden brown.

  13. Allow to cool and serve with ice cream or whipped cream for serving.

  14. Enjoy!
